Why it made our list
The Orient Kamasu is one of those affordable watches that remains difficult to argue against once you look at the complete package. You get a mechanical movement, sapphire crystal, a screw-down crown and 200 metres of water resistance without moving beyond our $300 budget.
Those specifications matter, but they are not the only reason the Kamasu works. This red-dial reference has a character of its own. Depending on the light, the dial can move from a relatively restrained burgundy to a much brighter red, while the distinctive hour markers prevent it from looking like another generic dive watch.
There are signs of where Orient has kept costs under control. Most notably, the bracelet does not feel as convincing as the watch head itself. But the underlying watch gets the important things right, which is why the Kamasu remains such a strong proposition for buyers looking for an affordable automatic diver.
Design & wearability
At 41.8mm across, the Kamasu has the presence expected from a modern dive watch without becoming excessively large. Its case shape and relatively compact proportions help it sit more comfortably than the diameter alone might suggest.
The red dial is the defining feature of this reference. It adds considerably more personality than the usual black or blue options, while the large hands and distinctive applied markers maintain the strong legibility expected from a dive watch.
The bracelet is less impressive. It is functional and perfectly usable, but the clasp and overall feel do not match the quality of the dial and watch head. Fortunately, the Kamasu is also a natural fit for rubber straps and aftermarket bracelets.
