Why it deserves a mention
The GA-2100 takes the durability expected from a G-Shock and puts it into a noticeably slimmer package. At only 11.8mm thick and 51 grams, it avoids much of the bulk traditionally associated with the brand.
That does not come at the expense of capability. Carbon Core Guard construction protects the module, while shock resistance and 200 metres of water resistance make this a watch that can handle considerably more abuse than most alternatives at the same price.
So why only an honorable mention? Versatility. The angular case, analog-digital layout and completely blacked-out appearance are a deliberate aesthetic choice. For the right buyer that is the attraction, but it is less universally wearable than the watches in our main selection.
Design & wearability
The dimensions suggest a large watch, but the GA-2100 wears smaller than its 45.4mm width might imply. Its relatively slim 11.8mm profile and 51-gram weight keep it comfortable, while the integrated shape helps the case sit securely on the wrist.
The octagonal bezel gives the GA-2100 its distinctive identity, while the combination of analogue hands and a small digital display makes the dial more visually interesting than a conventional digital G-Shock.
The 1A1 colourway does introduce a real compromise. Black hands, dark markers and a negative digital display create a cohesive monochrome look, but quick readability is weaker than on higher-contrast versions of the GA-2100. The double LED light helps in darkness, but cannot completely solve daytime legibility.
The resin band is exactly what we would expect here. It is lightweight, flexible and appropriate for the watch's intended use. Unlike some inexpensive bracelets, there is no strong reason to replace it unless you simply want to change the appearance.
G-Shock
G-Shock began with a simple but ambitious goal: create a wristwatch capable of surviving impacts that would destroy a conventional watch. The first G-Shock arrived in 1983 and established a design philosophy centred around toughness and practical functionality.
The GA-2100 introduced a different interpretation of that formula. Launched as part of the 2100 series in 2019, it retained the durability associated with G-Shock while using Carbon Core Guard construction to create a slimmer and lighter case.
Our verdict
The G-Shock GA-2100-1A1 delivers an unusual amount of capability for its price. It is shock resistant, lightweight and rated to 200 metres of water resistance, yet remains slim enough for comfortable everyday wear.
The main compromise is specific to this all-black version. Its monochrome appearance looks distinctive, but legibility is noticeably weaker than on GA-2100 variants with brighter hands and markers.
As a pure tool watch, it is one of the strongest options in this price range. It sits outside our top five only because its design is less versatile, not because it lacks quality or capability.
