Why it made our list
Not every good watch under $300 needs a mechanical movement. The Citizen Promaster makes a particularly convincing case for choosing something more practical. Its Eco-Drive movement uses light as its energy source, removing the routine battery changes associated with a conventional quartz watch.
The rest of the watch is equally focused on function. The 200-metre water resistance, unidirectional bezel and highly legible dial give the Promaster genuine tool-watch credentials rather than simply the appearance of a dive watch.
The trade-off is size. At 45mm across and around 187 grams on its steel bracelet, this is a substantial watch. That physical presence suits its purpose, but buyers with smaller wrists should not assume it will wear as easily as the dimensions of the other watches in this guide.
Design & wearability
The Promaster looks exactly as purposeful as its specifications suggest. The large markers, broad hands and blue dive bezel prioritise legibility, while the stainless-steel case and bracelet give the watch a substantial presence on the wrist.
At 45mm, this is not a universally wearable design. On a larger wrist the size reinforces its character as a dedicated tool watch. On a smaller wrist, the combination of diameter and weight can become the defining part of the wearing experience.
Mineral crystal is another compromise. Citizen describes it as resistant to impact and shattering, which makes sense for a tool-focused watch, but sapphire would offer better resistance to everyday scratches. It is one of the few areas where the specification sheet feels less competitive.

The Promaster collection represents the more function-driven side of the brand. The BN0191-55L combines that philosophy with Eco-Drive, creating a dive watch that requires very little attention from its owner while remaining ready for regular use.
Our verdict
The Citizen Promaster BN0191-55L is arguably the most practical watch in this guide. Eco-Drive removes much of the maintenance associated with traditional watch ownership, while 200 metres of water resistance gives the watch genuine capability.
Its size is the main reason it will not work for everyone. A 45mm case and substantial steel bracelet create a watch with real physical presence, and the mineral crystal is less impressive than the sapphire found on some similarly priced competitors.
But if you want a watch that can be worn hard and requires very little attention in return, those compromises are relatively easy to understand. The Promaster is not the most refined watch under $300, but it may be one of the most dependable.
